Can you help?

The photograph below shows a group of men including my grandfather, standing in front of tents all in civilian clothes. I don't know where it was taken but it was sent to my grandmother during World War 1.
Can anyone identify some of the people in it. I'm just curious as to what it's all about as I have no information on the photo at all apart from my grandfather being one of the men.
My grandfather, Edward Merchant is third from the right.
