There are 2,357 entries in all, from April 1st. 1606 to Oct. 1 1895. — i.e. 1004 baptisms. 468 marriages, 885 burials. For each quarter century the number of recorded entries is : —

The first register is a small book, 101/4 inches long, 41/4 inches broad and half an inch thick. The earlier entries (1606-1700) are copied from old register leaves apparently the hand writing being that of the Rev. Thomas Morgan rector 1687-1717, buried here 18 Oct. 1717, who has entered this note at the beginning of the volume then consisting of 22 pages ; —

"Memor yt Tho. Morgan. Rector of Swindon came to inhabit here March ye 31st 1688.
"Memor yt this Book came to my hands May ye 15th, 1698, Mr. John Sluring and George Horton being churchwardens."
In 1763 new parchment sheets were added, and the whole bound into one book. Scattered among its 58 pages are the signatures of 24 churchwardens 1740-1751, and four rectors 1687-1785; whilst the dates of "Visitations at
Cheltenham" are recorded from 1741 to 1785. The first of these is mentioned thus:—

"Here endeth ye Transcript of this Register given in at Bishop's Visitacon
"holden at Cheltenham, June 30th 1741.

A similar statement appears each year until 1770, from when till 1785 dates only begin to be recorded; altogether 20 Bishops' Visitations and 35 Archdeacons Visitations- -47 at Cheltenham and 8 at Tewkesbury -are mentioned between the years 1741 and 1812. In 1779 the Rector wrote: —

"Deliver'd in at the Bishop's Visitation held at Tewkesbury for the first time on May the 17th 1779."
Marriages and Burials from 1638 to 1740, and Baptisms 1606-1740, are kept apart; but this was altered in the following year when the Rector wrote : —
"June 30, 1741. From henceforward the articles of Births, Bur. & Mars will
"go togeather under one & the Same Column."

There are no Baptisms earlier than 1606, nor were any recorded during the years 1607-1612, 1614-1619, 1621-1626, 1628, 1633, 1637, 1640, 1644, 1648-1651, 1653, 1658-1661, 1663-1664, 1671-1672, 1692, 1694, 1700; 1712, 1722, 1754, 1782; 1827, 1875.

The earliest burial is 1638 -some of the tomb stones bear earlier dates than this ; e.g. Elizabeth Clifford, 30 Oct. 1622, and Edward Stanton, 13 Dec. 1632 — but none are mentioned in 1642, 1644-45, 1647-1660, 1663-69, 1672-76, 1678,1681, 1685,1695-96, 1699; 1704-6, 1709, 1712, 1718, 1723-24, 1732-33. 1744, 1754,1762, 1764, 1777, 1781, 1783, 1785, 1788, 1792, 1794, 1797; 1807, 1809, 1889.

The earliest marriage took place 1638; none were solemnized, it would appear, during the years 1639-1669, 1671-78, 1680-85, 1687-88, 1690; 1721, 1727-28, 1735, 1738-42, 1747-48, 1751-52, 1754-55, 1758-59, 1764, 1772, 1775, 1781-83, 1786-87, 1790-93, 1796, 1799, 1800: 1803, 1807, 1815, 1820, 1854, 1870, 1873, 1878-1880, 1885, 1888.

There were no baptisms, marriages or burials placed on record during 1607- 1612, 1614-1619, 1621-1626, 1628, 1633, 1637, 1644, 1648-1651, 1653, 1658- 1660, 1663-1664, 1672, 1754.
The most numerous entries are those relating to the families of Acocks (18), Baldwyn (12), Cherrington (20), Clifford (79), Compton (15), Cook (14), Field (15), Fluck (41), Hatton (12), Hawker (17), Hyett (11), Jones (21), Long (12), Morgan (31), Riddall (11), Roberts (17), Saunders (16), Smith (11), Stephens (35), Stratford (10), Sturmy (20), Surman (34), Taylor (l0), Watts (18), White (13), Wilson (12), Yeats (14), Young (24).

The proportion of weddings at Swindon appears to be unusually large having regard to the population. This is very marked in this period 1701-1725 and 1825-1850 and is due to the fact that a very large number of non-parishoners were wedded at Swindon. In 1701-1725 there were 56 baptisms against 67 weddings. Of these 134 persons thus married only 8 were Swindon people. In 1825- 1850 there were 172 christenings as against 170 marriages.
