Mangotsfield War Memorial
THERE ARE TWO MEMORIALS IN THE PARISH OF MANGOTSFIELD, Gloucestershire, UK.
THIS ONE IS IN THE ALEC LARGE MEMORIAL GARDEN AT THE JUNCTION OF RODWAY HILL ROAD AND MANGOTSFIELD ROAD.
THE MEMORIAL IS A GRANITE CROSS SET ON AN OCTAGONAL PLINTH.
The inscription, set on the obverse side of the cross reads:-
THIS CROSS WAS ERECTED

YEAR 1919, TO THE GLORY OF
GOD AND IN GRATEFUL AND
REVERENT MEMORY OF
THIRTY-ONE MEN OF
MANGOTSFIELD WHO
GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR THEIR
COUNTRY IN THE GREAT WAR
1914-19 AND WHOS NAMES
ARE RECORDED ON THE
REVERSE SIDE OF THIS CROSS.
"THEY DIED THAT WE MIGHT LIVE."
The names are recorded on a bronze plaque.

Lieutenant Walter Henry Charles Cave,
Son of Charles Henry and Beatrice Julia
Cave of Sidbury manor, Sidmouth, Devon. Served in 1st Battalion, Dorsetshire
Regt, killed in action Ypres, Monday 15th March 1915, aged 20
years.Commemorated at Ramparts cemetery, Lille Gate, Ieper, Belgium.
Lieutenant Frederick James Stone
7th battalion Gloucestershire Regt.
Died of wounds received at Imam Al Mansur Iraq, on 29th December 1916 aged 24
years. He is buried at the Amara War Cemetery, Iraq. He was the son of James Edwin and
Harriet Stone of "Okuta", Staple Hill, Bristol.
Petty Officer Stoker Samuel Charles Iles
HMS Arabis Royal Navy, died Friday 11 February 1916 aged 33years. Commemorated on
the Plymouth Naval Memorial, Devon. He was the son of Tom and Eliza Miles of Mangotsfield,
husband of Lilian May Iles of St James' Place, Mangotsfield.
Bombardier Thomas Morley Cross.
Served in "A" Battery, 47th Brigade, Royal Field Artillery and
died on Monday 23 April 1917 He is commemorated at the London Cemetery, Neuville-Vitasse,
Pas de Calais, France.
L/Cpl William Alfred Hendy
Served in 1st Bttn. Somerset Light Infantry and died on Monday 14 June
1915 aged 21 years. He is buried at the Ferme-Olivier Cemetery, Elverdinghe, Ieper,
Belgium.
L/Cpl James Powell.
Served in "N" Special Company, Royal Engineers and died on Thursday 19 July
1917 aged 21 years. He was formerly in the Gloucestershire Regt. He has no known grave and
is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial Ieper, Belgium. He was the son of Mr. & Mrs
W Powell 0f 2, Northcote Road, Mangotsfield.
Ldg Gnr Frederick Charles Rich.
Served in 169th Brigade Machine Gun Company, Royal Naval Division, RNVR.
He died on Tuesday 24 April 1917 aged 23 years. He has no known grave but is commemorated
on the Arras Memorial, Pas de Calais, France. He was the son of Joseph and Clara Rich of
24, Northcote Road, Mangotsfield.
Gnr Gilbert Frederick Cross
Served as a Driver in "C" Bty , 110th Brigade, Royal Field
Artillery. He died on Wednesday 1 May 1918 aged 37 years. He is commemorated at the
Godewaersvelde British Cemetery, Nord, France and at the south side of St
James'Churchyard, Mangotsfield. He was the husband of Mary Ann Cross of Mangotsfield.
Gnr George Hillier
Served in 160th Siege Bty. Royal Garrison Artillery and died on Monday 2
September 1918. He is buried at Assevillers New British Cemetery, Somme, France.
Gnr Sidney George Stiddard.
Served in 12th Btn. Tank Corps. He was formerly a Private in South
Lancashire Regt. He died on Monday 2 September 1918 aged 35 years. He is commemorated at
the Mory Abbey Military Cemetery, Pas de Calais, France. He was the son of John and Louisa Stiddard of Mangotsfield and husband of Florence May Stiddard of 107, Lawn Road,
Fishponds, Bristol.
Aircraftman 2nd Class E Eckett. Royal Flying Corps.
Sapper Reginald Walter Edwin Tavener
Served in 20th Coy, Royal Engineers and died on 29 August 1916. He is
commemorated at the Dantzig Alley British Cemetery, Mametz, France.
Pte Albert William Alfred Baber
Served in 2nd Btn. Royal Warwickshire Regt. and died on Monday 8 October
1917. He has no known grave but is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Zonnebeke,
Belgium. He was the son of Richmond and Sarah Baber of Mangotsfield.
Pte Bert George Baker
Served in 2nd/4th Btn.Royal Berkshire Regt. and died on
Thursday 18 April 1918 aged 37 years. He is buried in the St. Venant-Robecq Road British
Cemetery, Robecq, Pas de Calais, France. He was the son of Tom and Emma Baker of Downend
and husband of Mabel Baker of 12 Cossham Street, Mangotsfield.
Pte Robert Beaver
Served in 2nd Btn. Royal Warwickshire Regt. and died on Monday 8 October
1917. He is buried in the Tyne Cot Cemetery, Zonnebeke, Belgium.
Pte Charles Bennison
Served in 12th Btn. (Bristol's Own) Gloucestershire Regt. and died
on Sunday 3 September 1916 aged 25 years. He has no known grave but is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France. He was the son of Benjamin and Alice Bennison of Lewis
Villa, Teewell Hill, Staple Hill,Bristol.
Pte William W Bennett
Served in 2nd Btn. Monmouthshire Regt. and died on Tuesday 1 June 1915
aged 35 years. He is buried in Ste. Marie Cemetery, Le-Havre, Seine-Maritime, France. He
was the son of Worthington and Caroline Bennett and husband of E M Bennett of 3 Albany
Terrace, Soundwell Road, Staple Hill, Bristol.
Pte Frank Bryant
Served in 2nd/4th Btn. Royal Berkshire Regt. and died on
Thursday 13 June 1918 aged 37 years. He is buried at the St. Venant-Robecq Road British
Cemetery, Pas de Calais, France. He was the son of William and Maria Bryant.
Pte Herbert (Bert) William Cox
Served in 2nd Btn. Yorkshire Regt. and died on Tuesday 3 April 1917. He
is buried at Warlincourt Halte British Cemetery, Saulty, Pas de Calais, France. He was
formerly in the Royal Field Artillery.
Pte Stafford Cryer
Served in 1st/8th Btn. Lancashire Fusiliers (Territorial
Force) and died at Gallipoli on Saturday 7 August 1915 aged 19 years. He has no known
grave but is commemorated on the Helles Memorial, Turkey. He was the son of Charlie and
Ellen Cryer of 213 Second Street, Trafford Park, Manchester.
Pte Thomas Sheppard Fox
Served in 8th Btn. Royal Berkshire Regt. and previously in the
Worcestershire Regt. He died on Thursday 28 December 1916. He has no known grave but is
commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France. He was the husband of Jesse Fox and
father of Myrtle.
Pte Nelson Gainey
Served in the 42nd Remount Depot, Army Service Corps and died on
Wednesday 25 September 1918 during the influenza epidemic in the Balkans. He is buried in
the BRALO British Cemetery, Greece.
Pte Richard Herbert Hopes
Served in the Royal Army Medical Corps and died of wounds at home on Tuesday 13
April 1915 aged 21 years. He is buried on the south-east side of St James Churchyard,
Mangotsfield. He was the son of Herbert James Hopes Croydon House, Cossham Street,
Mangotsfield.
Pte William Marsh
Served in 110th Coy, Machine Gun Corps (Infantry), formerly in the
Gloucestershire Regt and died on Monday 9 October 1916 aged 28 years. He has no known
grave but is commemorated on the Loos Memorial, Pas de Calais, France. He was the son of
Thomas and Ellen Marsh of Mangotsfield.
Pte Frederick Powell
Served in 12th Btn. Gloucestershire Regt. and died on Sunday 30 July
1916 aged 21 years. He has no known grave but is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial,
Somme, France. He was the son of Fred and Elizabeth Powell of Windsor Place, Mangotsfield.
Pte Hubert Powell
Served in the 10th Btn. Gloucestershire Regt. and died on Saturday 19
August 1916 He has no known grave but is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme,
France.
Pte E Summerill ( or Summerell)
Edward John Summerell, baptised Mangotsfield on 7 April 1895, parents John and Mary Summerell.
Served in 5th Btn. Dorsetshire Regt. and died on Friday 28 February 1919 at
Denain, a German hospital centre. He is buried in Denain Communal Cemetery, Nord, France.
Pte J T Webb
Served in 2nd Btn. Gloucestershire Regt. and died on Friday 6 December
1918.
He is buried in Dedeagatch British Cemetery, Greece.
Pte Athur William Young
Served in "B" Coy. 2nd Btn. Worcestershire Regt. and died on
Sunday 20 September 1914 aged 24 years. He has no known grave but is commemorated on the
La Ferte-Sous-Jouarre memorial, Seine-et-Marne, France. He was the son of William and
Elizabeth Young of 14a Forest Road, Fishponds, Bristol.
KOREA
Pte D G Morris
Served in 1st Btn. Gloucestershire Regt. and died on Wednesday 25 April
1951 during the battle of the Imjin River.
