Marshfield War Memorial

The Memorial is a marble obelisk set on a square base surrounded by 4 marble planters. It is located in the Market Place at the East end of the main street in the village of Marshfield, Gloucestershire, England.

The memorial was renewed in 1993 and is in an excellent state of repair and is well cared for.

The inscription is on the West face of the obelisk and reads :-

Gnr Albert Perriman served in "C" Bty. 59th Bde. Royal Field Artillery and died at Gallipoli on Saturday 20 November 1915 aged 29 yrs. He has no known grave but is commemorated on the HELLES MEMORIAL, Turkey. He was the son of Jonah and Rhoda Perriman of High St. Marshfield.

Private William Edwards Woodham served in 1st/4th Bn. Somerset Light Infantry and died on Wednesday 29 March 1916 aged 23 yrs. He has no known grave but is commemorated on the KIRKEE 1914-1918 MEMORIAL, India.

Private Charles F Jones served in 1st Bn. Gloucestershire Regiment and died on Sunday 23 April 1916 aged 33 yrs. He is buried in BULLY-GRENAY COMMUNAL CEMETERY FRENCH EXTENSION, Pas de Calais, France. He was the son of Mr C Jones of 2 Springfield Cottages, Marshfield.

Private Thomas Burgess served in 1st Bn. Somerset Light Infantry and died on Saturday 1 July 1916 aged 25 yrs. He has no known grave but is commemorated on the THIEPVAL MEMORIAL, Somme, France.

Private Edward James Ball served in the 42nd Bn. Canadian Infantry (Quebec Regt.) and died on Saturday 16 September 1916 aged 21 yrs. He is buried in CONTAY BRITISH CEMETERY, CONTAY, Somme, France He was the son of William and Harriett Ball of Ringswell, Marshfield.

Private Wilfred James Booy served in the Pioneer Corps and died on Monday 19 March 1945 aged 43 yrs. He is buried in MARSHFIELD CEMETERY. He was the son of John and Louisa Booy of Marshfield.

Driver Arthur John Lewis served in the Royal Army Service Corps and died on Friday 31 May 1940 aged 21 yrs. He is buried in DE PANNE COMMUNAL CEMETERY, De Panne, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium.

Ordinary Seaman Frederick John Hatherell served in H M S Drake, Royal Navy and died on Tuesday 29 April 1941 aged 23 yrs. He is buried in PLYMOUTH (WESTON MILL) CEMETERY. He was the son of Alfred John and Dora Hatherell of Wick, Bristol.

Able Seaman William Thomas Britqn Deacon served in H M S Repulse, Royal Navy and died on Wednesday 10 December 1941 aged 26 yrs. He has no known grave but is commemorated on the PLYMOUTH NAVAL MEMORIAL. He was the son of George James Deacon and Louisa Priscilla Deacon of Marshfield.

Lance Corporal Ernest William James Billett served in the 9th Queen's Royal Lancers, R A C. and died on Tuesday 30 March 1943 aged 29 yrs. He has no known grave but is commemorated on the MEDJEZ-EL-BAB MEMORIAL, Tunisia. He was the son of James and Annie Billett and husband of Joan Billett of Marshfield.

Corporal Charles Andrew Harding served in the Royal Army Service Corps and died on Thursday 30 December 1943 aged 36 yrs. He is buried in RAMLEH WAR CEMETERY, Israel. He was the son of Henry and Emma Harding of Marshfield.

Gunner Arthur Maurice Lewis served in 186 Field Regt. Royal Artillery and died on Monday 9 July 1945 aged 20 yrs. He is buried in MARSHFIELD CEMETERY. He was the son of Ernest George and Emily Lewis of Marshfield.

Lance Corporal Edward Salmon served in 8th Bn. Gloucestershire Regt. and died on Thursday 28 March 1918 aged 25 yrs. He has no known grave but is commemorated on the ARRAS MEMORIAL, Pas de Calais, France.

Private Albert George Pullin served in 2nd/5th Bn.Gloucestershire Regt. and died on Wednesday 24 April 1918 aged 18 yrs. He has no known grave but is commemorated on The LOOS MEMORIAL, Pas de Calais, France. He was the son of Austin and Mary Louisa Pullin of Turnpike House, West End, Marshfield.

Second Lieutenant Charles Walter Bodman served in the 15th Bn. Durham Light Infantry and died on Saturday 24 August 1918 aged 28 yrs. He has no known grave but is commemorated on the VIS-EN-ARTOIS MEMORIAL, Pas de Calais, France. He was the son of Walter and Sarah Bodman of High Street, Marshfield. He enlisted in October 1914.

Private Sidney Albert Harding served in 1st Bn. Gloucestershire Regt. and died on Saturday 19 October 1918 aged 27 yrs. He is buried in HIGHLAND CEMETERY, LE CATEAU, Nord, France.

Gunner John James Burgess served in the Royal Field Artillery and died on Monday 21 October 1918 aged 30 yrs. He is buried in MARSHFIELD (ST MARY) CHURCHYARD. He was the son of Mr and Mrs Amos Burgess.

Gunner Harold Sidney Hinton served in the Royal Field Artillery and died on Monday 28 October 1918 aged 21 yrs. He is buried in MARSHFIELD (ST. MARY) CHURCHYARD. He was the son of Sidney J and Alice Hinton of West End, Marshfield.

Gunner P Fuller MM served in 36th Bty. 33rd Bde. Royal Field Artillery and died on Saturday 21 July 1917 aged 20 yrs. He is buried in VLAMERTINGHE NEW MILITARY CEMETERY, Ieper, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. He was the son of Arthur and Clara Fuller of Marshfield.

Private Joseph E Morgan served in the 9th Bn. The Loyal North Lancashire Regt. and died on Tuesday 31 July 1917 aged 31 yrs. He is buried in HOOGE CRATER CEMETERY, Ieper, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. He was the son of Charles and Ellen Morgan and husband of Alice Morgan of Hay Street, Marshfield.

Gunner Leonard Coles served in 306th Seige Bty. Royal Garrison Artillery and died on Thursday 13 September 1917 aged 21 yrs. He is buried in LIJSSENTHOEK MILITARY CEMETERY, Poperinge, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. He was the son of James and Georgina Coles of Little End, Marshfield.

Sapper A Britton served in 477th (South Midland) Field Coy. Royal Engineers and died on Tuesday 21 August 1917 aged 22 yrs. He is buried in DUHALLOW A.D.S. CEMETERY, Ieper, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. He was the son of Alfred and Sarah Ann Britton, of Gladstone Street, Soundwell, Staple Hill, Bristol.

Second Lieutenant Edward Elms Bown served in the 1st/4th Bn. Northamptonshire Regt. and died on Friday 2 November 1917 aged 34 yrs. He is buried in GAZA WAR CEMETERY, Israel. He was the son of John James and Hester Rachel Bown and was born at Marshfield.

Corporal Arthur Edwin Bryan served in 16th Sqdn. Machine Gun Corps (Cav) and died on Monday 19 November 1917 aged 24 yrs. He held the Gold Medal (Serbia). He is buried in ALEXANDRA (HADRA) WAR MEMORIAL CEMETERY, Egypt. He was the son of Edwin and Jane Bryan of Brook House, Doynton and was a native of Marshfield.
