In grateful memory of the men of  Elmore who gave their lives in the Great War 1914 – 1918
They died that we might live, Hail – and – Farewell!  All honour gave to those who nobly striving, nobly fell, that we might live

GUISE Henry George Christopher, 2nd Lt, 5th Gloucestershire Regt died 6/5/1915 age 27. Son of Sir William Francis G, 5th  Bart and Lady Ada Caroline Guise, nee Coope of Elmore Court, Elmore and previously of “Rochetts”, South Weald, Essex. Buried at Ploegsteert, Wodd Military Cemetery, Belgium. III.D.8

LOVELL Arthur Moss,  Sgt, 17164 12th Gloucestershire Regt, killed in action on Friday23/8/1918 age 23. Son of Henry and Rosa Jane Lovell, nee Moss of Severn Farm, Elmore. Buried at Queen Cemetery, Bucquoy, France. IV.A.7

CLARKE Edward Martin,  Pte 30798, 9th Lancashire Fusiliers died 4/10/1917 age 19. Son of Thomas and Annie F Clarke of Victoria Cottages, Real Lane, Hempstead, Quedgley, Glos. Commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium

GARDENER James, Pte 241677, A. Coy, 1/5th Gloucestershire Regt, died Thursday 6/8/1917 age 30. Son of James and Rose Alma Gardener of  Brookfield House, Elmore. Commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme. (GWGC spelt his surname as Gardner)

MAYO Reginald W E, Private 138417, 58th Machine Gun Corps (Inf) formerly Pte 1898, Northumberland Fusiliers. Killed in action 16 September 1918, buried at Peronne Communal Cemetery Extension, Somme France. He was the son of George and Sarah Ann Mayo (nee Ryder)

MERRETT William Joseph, Pte, 28248 12th Gloucestershire Regt, died of wounds on Tuesday 2/10/1917 age 26. Son of Henry Edward and Mary Ann Merrett  nee Houdley of Ivy House, Elmore. Burid at Dozinghem Military Cemetery, Belgium. VII.H.9. (Note, The Soldiers of Gloucestershire, web site have him in the 1st/5th Gloucestershire Regt.)

SPENCER Alfred, Pte, Royal Warwickshire Regt (Not listed with the CWGC) Additional information, 1901 census. Son of William and Mary Spencer of The Cottage, Elmore. Medal Index, Pte 1306, same regiment

WEBB Wintour Edward,  Pte 11317, 7th Gloucestershire Regt killed in action on Sunday 8/8/1915 age 20 . Son of  Elizabeth Smith, formerly Webb and the late Herbert of Holly Tree Cottage, Longney, Glos. Commemorated on the Helles Memorial, Turkey.

COE Albert Nathan, Ordinary Seaman, D/JX206237, French Ship, “Medoc” Royal Navy died 26/11/1940 age 27. Husband of Ann M.A. Coe of Elmore. Commemorated on the Plymouth Naval Memorial

CRESSWELL Herbert Wallis Pte, 5186709, 5th  Gloucestershire Regt died 17/5/1940, age 21. Son of Tom and Ellen Cresswell of Elmore. Commemorated on the Dunkirk Memorial, France

WYATT Hubert Vaunton Leslie Pte 5183017, 1st Gloucestershire Regt died between 20th and 30th/7/1942. Commemorated on the Rangoon Memorial, Burma
